Our Review

Written by AnimeReview Team
Forget everything you thought you knew about sports anime or idol anime, because Uma Musume: Pretty Derby Season 2 is an absolute masterpiece that blew every single one of my expectations out of the water! When I first heard the premise of "horse girls" racing, I admit, I was intrigued but skeptical. But from the very first episode, this anime grabbed me by the heartstrings and didn't let go, delivering an emotional rollercoaster that has cemented itself as one of my all-time favorite viewing experiences. The sheer, unadulterated passion and dedication radiating from every frame is utterly infectious.

The story, primarily following the journey of Toukai Teiou, is nothing short of breathtaking. Initially introduced as a prodigy with an unshakeable belief in her own talent and a dream of achieving the Triple Crown, Teiou's path is fraught with immense challenges and heartbreaking setbacks. I found myself absolutely enthralled watching her soar to incredible heights, only to be met with crushing injuries and doubt. The way the narrative handles her struggle to return to the track, to rediscover her joy in running, and to overcome the physical and mental hurdles, is incredibly potent and surprisingly realistic. Every victory felt earned, and every defeat resonated deeply, making her eventual triumphs all the more exhilarating and tear-jerking.

The characters are truly the heart and soul of this series, and I completely fell in love with them, especially the iconic duo of Toukai Teiou and Mejiro McQueen. Teiou's infectious optimism and boundless energy are instantly endearing, but it's her vulnerability and unwavering spirit in the face of adversity that truly make her an unforgettable protagonist. Her rival-turned-best-friend, Mejiro McQueen, is equally compelling – a proud and elegant horse girl with her own struggles and aspirations. Their dynamic, a blend of intense competition and profound mutual respect and affection, is the emotional core of the show. Their bond transcends mere rivalry, showcasing a deep friendship that pushes them both to be better, inspiring not just each other, but me as a viewer to root for their happiness and success with every fiber of my being.

Studio KAI absolutely outdid themselves with the animation in Uma Musume Season 2. The race sequences are a marvel of kinetic energy and visual storytelling. The sense of speed, power, and determination is palpable, with dynamic camera angles, fluid character movements, and incredibly detailed expressions that convey every ounce of effort and emotion. The way their hair and tails flow, the powerful strides, the grit in their eyes – it's all breathtaking. And let's not forget the "lives" (concerts) performed after each major race; they are vibrant, gorgeously choreographed spectacles that add another layer of charm and celebration to the victories.

The soundtrack is another phenomenal aspect that elevates the entire experience. From the incredibly catchy opening theme that gets your blood pumping, to the diverse array of insert songs during the races and "lives," every piece of music is perfectly placed. The way the emotional ballads swell during moments of doubt or triumph, or how an energetic track amplifies the excitement of a close race, is masterful. The music doesn't just accompany the visuals; it enhances the emotional impact, making me feel every surge of adrenaline, every pang of despair, and every wave of pure joy right along with the characters.

What truly makes Uma Musume: Pretty Derby Season 2 special is its profound exploration of themes like perseverance, friendship, and the relentless pursuit of a dream, even when the odds are stacked against you. It's not just about winning races; it's about the journey, the setbacks, the unbreakable bonds forged through shared struggles, and the sheer joy of giving your all. This anime made me laugh, cry, and cheer uncontrollably, proving that a unique premise can hide one of the most genuinely heartfelt and inspiring stories you'll ever encounter. It's a testament to the power of unwavering spirit and the magic of believing in yourself and your friends.

If you're looking for an anime that will make you feel every emotion imaginable, inspire you to chase your own dreams, and leave you with an overwhelming sense of hope and satisfaction, then you absolutely MUST watch Uma Musume: Pretty Derby Season 2. It’s a triumphant, exhilarating, and deeply moving experience that I wholeheartedly recommend to anyone and everyone.

This season dives deep back into the thrilling world of horse girls, where incredible athletes with the spirits of famous racehorses compete on grand tracks, aiming for glory and personal bests. We're reunited with the beloved Team Spica, a group of popular and powerful racers who continue to rack up victories, but this time, the spotlight shines intensely on one particular star: Toukai Teiou.

At the center of it all is the dazzling Toukai Teiou, a star from Team Spica who practically radiates charisma and undeniable talent. I mean, she's got this infectious energy that just makes you root for her instantly! Her dream? To achieve the legendary Triple Crown, a seemingly impossible feat that demands winning three major G1 races consecutively, a challenge only one other horse girl in history has ever conquered. Teiou is determined to etch her name into history alongside the legendary Symboli Rudolf, showcasing her exceptional running skills and cheerful personality every step of the way.

But as anyone who's chased a dream knows, the path is rarely smooth. Teiou's journey to the Triple Crown is fraught with both exhilarating victories and unexpected hurdles. She'll face off against formidable rivals, some familiar faces returning for another showdown, and new challengers who push her to her absolute limits. This season beautifully captures the intensity of these rivalries, making every race feel like a high-stakes emotional rollercoaster.

What truly resonated with me about *Uma Musume: Pretty Derby Season 2*, however, wasn't just the electrifying races, but the profound emotional depth. This isn't just a story about winning; it's about what happens when your greatest dreams are tested, when injuries threaten to derail everything, and when you have to make choices that will define your entire career. It explores resilience, friendship, and the sheer willpower required to stand back up, even when the odds feel insurmountable. I genuinely felt every one of Teiou's struggles and triumphs, making her journey incredibly personal and impactful.

Honestly, if you're looking for an anime that will make you cheer, gasp, and maybe even shed a tear or two, then this season is a must-watch. It's a masterclass in character development and delivers some of the most emotionally resonant sports moments I've seen in anime, proving that the heart of a champion lies not just in victory, but in the unwavering spirit to keep running.

Just finished season 2 after hearing so much buzz! I can't believe how invested I got in these horse girls' races, it's so much more intense and emotional than I expected. Is season 1 just as good, or should I jump straight into the game?

While the central drama with Teio and McQueen was powerful, I do think some of the other members of Team Spica felt a bit underdeveloped this season. The pacing could drag a little between the major races too.

They really captured the agony and triumph of training Teio in the game, it felt so accurate to her story. Also, I crack up every time Gold Ship pulls one of her stunts, she's pure chaotic energy. 😂
